জেমস ফেনিমোর কুপার জন্মগ্রহণ করেছিলেন (১৫.৯.১৭৮৯) আমেরিকার নিউজার্সি অঙ্গরাজ্যের বার্লিংটনে। পিতা উইলিয়াম কুপার এবং মা এলিজাবেথ কপার। পিতা ছিলেন কংগ্রেসের সদস্য এবং এলাকার বিশিষ্ট ধনাঢ্য ব্যক্তি। ছেলের জন্মের এক বছর পর উইলিয়াম কুপার নিউইয়র্ক অঙ্গরাজ্যের কুপারসটাউনে চলে আসেন। ফেনিমুর কুপার আলবেনিতে বাের্ডিং স্কুলে লেখাপড়ার পর ইয়েল কলেজে ভর্তি হন। পরে লেখাপড়ায় ইস্তফা ঘটলে আমেরিকার অভিজাত পেশা নৌবাহিনীতে যােগ দেন তিনি। সেখানে কমিশনপ্রাপ্তও হয়েছিলেন। কিন্তু নৌবাহিনীতে কয়েক বছর যেতে না যেতেই চাকরিতে ইস্তফা দিয়ে চলে আসতে হয় তাকে। এর মধ্যে ১৮০৯ সালে উইলিয়াম কুপার মারা যান। ফলে পরিবারে বিপর্যয় নেমে আসে। অবশ্য পিতার মৃত্যুর পর বিপুল পারিবারিক সম্পদের মালিক হন তিনি। ১৮১১ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে সুসান অগাস্টা নামের সম্রান্ত বংশের এক মেয়েকে বিয়ে করেন তিনি। বিয়ের পরপরই তিনি সাহিত্যচর্চার পথে পা বাড়ান। স্ত্রী সুসান অগাস্টার উৎসাহও ছিল এতে। ১৮২০ সালে Precaution নামে তার প্রথম উপন্যাস বেরােয়, অনেকটা জেন অস্টেনের অনুকরণ। এরপর পর্যায়ক্রমে বেরােয় The Spy (১৮২১), The Pilot (১৮২৩), The Prarie (১৮২৭) ইত্যাদি। তার গল্পসংগ্রহLatherstockings Tales তাকে আর্থিকভাবে প্রতিষ্ঠা এনে দেয়। শুরুতেই তার লেখা বেশ পাঠকপ্রিয়তা অর্জন করে। তার খ্যাতি আমেরিকার বাইরেও বিস্তৃত হয়। বলা যায়, দেশের বাইরেই তিনি বেশি পরিচিতি পান। তার লেখা উপন্যাসগুলাের মধ্যে The Spy (১৮২১), The Pioneer (Sb2O), The Last of the Mohicans (১৮২৬), The Prairie (১৮২৭), The Inland Sea (১৮৪০), The Der Slaver (১৮৪১) বিশেষ উল্লেখযােগ্য। ১৮৫১ সালের ১৪ সেপ্টেম্বর কুপারসটাউনে জনপ্রিয় এই লেখক মৃত্যুবরণ করেন।
